WWL Annual Event

WWL Annual Event will be taking place Friday, October 14 at the Grand Hyatt.  Registration for the event is still open at www.wwl.org, but ends Monday.

The speaker is Sarah Weddington, who argued Roe v. Wade to the U.S. Supreme Court at the age of 26 (and is thought to be the youngest person to have won a Supreme Court case).  She went on to serve as a legislator, educator, and adviser to President Carter on judicial appointments (including the appointment of now-Justice Ginsberg to the federal bench).

Washington State Judicial Diversity Program

Apply to the Washington State Judicial Diversity Program!

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law seeks enthusiastic applicants from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds for a pilot Judicial Diversity Program, to launch in October 2011. Applicants should be interested in pursuing a career on the bench in Washington State. Judicial diversity is essential to helping our judiciary deliver equal justice, countering perceptions of systemic bias, and fostering the public’s faith in the legal system.

The need for good mentors is important when one enters the legal profession, and it becomes even more important as one seeks a judgeship. The Judicial Diversity Program will pair selected lawyers with an active or retired Washington state judge. Judges will assist mentees in:

In addition, throughout the Judicial Diversity Program, quarterly workshops and panels will be organized to enrich participants’ understanding of the judicial process.

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, was formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to involve the private bar in providing legal services to address racial discrimination. The principal mission of the Lawyers’ Committee is to secure, through the rule of law, equal justice under law.
